I love Greek food. I love Greek history. I love Greek people. Basically, I love everything about Greece. Throughout my schooling, I took at least four different classes on Ancient Greece because I was fascinated by the culture. Finally, this past summer, I had the opportunity to visit Greece. I spent 5 days in Santorini and fell in love with it like I knew I always would. It was absolutely beautiful and I had some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Everything in Greece is so fresh and nothing is over-seasoned or drowned in heavy sauces, so you feel good after eating. Ever since my trip, I’ve experimented with making my own souvlaki and tzatziki and I seize every opportunity to try out a Greek restaurant. So when I heard there was an authentic Greek restaurant in Homewood, right down the road from my office, I knew I had to go. Nabeel’s is an establishment in Homewood, known for serving traditional Greek fare with an attached market offering imported Greek and Italian foods.

I went to Nabeel’s with a few friends from work for lunch on Friday. One of my friends had been before, and he recommended the Bifteki (feta burger). My favorite Greek dish is chicken souvlaki, but since I’d just had my Dill Chicken Salad the night before, I felt like having beef instead of poultry and decided to branch out. And boy, am I glad I did! This burger ranks among the top 3 best burgers I’ve ever had. The beef was seasoned with Greek oregano, stuffed with feta and topped with Kefalograviera cheese. The burger had such a great flavor from the seasoning and was oozing with melted feta in each bite. I spread some tzatziki on the burger and was in such a food heaven. The burger was also served with fresh cut Greek fries, which were sprinkled with oregano. The whole meal was fabulous and I will definitely be heading back to Nabeel’s soon! I can’t wait to try some of their other dishes.
